Judge Grants Schenecker Case Extension

Both prosecutors and defense attorneys involved in the case for a Tampa woman accused of killing her children were granted additional time by a judge to make decisions regarding the case including the penalties and which defense will be utilized in trial.
Julie Schenecker, accused of murdering her two children in January, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, to which she pleaded not guilty. The prosecution asked for more time from the judge in order to determine if they will seek the death penalty. The defense for Schenecker is deciding if they will utilize an insanity defense.
When Schenecker was arrested in January she admitted in detail to killing her children for being "mouthy." She reportedly told police that she shot her son, Beau Powers Schenecker, 13, while driving him to soccer practice, then returned home to shoot her daughter, Calyx Powers Schenecker, 16, in her bedroom.
If convicted, Schenecker could potentially face the death penalty or an extremely long term in prison, depending upon which penalties the prosecution decides to pursue.
