Sergei Kusyakov from Central Florida recently came clean in federal court this past week regarding his actions. He was an injury hotline and medical center employee who acknowledged the fact that he paid two hospital employees, a husband and wife, to steal patient records form he hospital they worked at. According to his confession, he would use this patient information he received from Dale and Katrina Monroe to solicit patients regarding different lawyers and chiropractors in the area for help and treatment. Investigators found that he paid each of them an estimated $10,000 for their help in stealing the information.
According to the reports, Dale and Katrina gathered hundreds of thousands of patient records during their time working for Sergei, but he had his eye set out for a particular candidate. Out of the 763,000 records that were stolen total, he illegally reviewed in detail over 12,000 of them who were recent victims of automobile accidents. Sergei's scheme was working originally, until one patient received a phone call and realized that something didn't add up.
This Florida hospital patient received the call from Sergei and he recited a lot of private information regarding the patient's treatments as well as the car accident. The victim confronted Sergei and he would either hang up or try and convince the listeners that the information was available by public records. Prosecutors investigating the case discovered that one of the phone numbers used to call past patients linked back to Kusyakov.
This week, Sergei Kusyakov pleaded guilty to his actions of one count of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. as well as four counts of paying a non-licensed physician. At this point he is looking at a possible sentencing of 15 years in prison for his actions, to be determined in the end of March.
