Sunday, March 23, a Kenneth City man was arrested by a SWAT team that descended onto the home he shared with two roommates, roommates who had accused him of threatening them with a shotgun. Authorities reported that the roommates had gone to the police on Saturday night, saying they had been threatened by the 31-year-old man who was drunk. When police officers came to the house, the suspect would not come out. A SWAT team arrived at the house Sunday morning, making nearly 200 calls to the house phone over the course of about eight hours. Residents were evacuated from several homes. By that time it was about 11:30 a.m. SWAT members went inside the house to find the suspect sleeping. According to the Tampa Bay Times, after he was arrested he was taken to Pinellas County jail, with bail set at $20,000. His charges include:
Aggravated Assault: also called
assault with a deadly weapon, this third degree felony offense is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
- Felon in Possession of a Firearm: this second degree felony could carry a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, $10,000 in fines.
If you are charged with assault, this means you are being charged with a violent crime when no violence has actually been done. Assault means threatening someone; the charge would become one of assault and battery if you had followed through on the threat. Of course, this or any other charge can become that much more serious if you already have a felony conviction on your record.
Being branded as a convicted felon is a serious enough consequence on its own. A felony on your record could permanently damage your chances of finding a job, a place to live, and more.
