Compliance Checks and a Checkpoint June 20 to 23

Every district in Hillsborough County will see a DUI enforcement event this week, either a checkpoint or a set of compliance checks. While the location of the DUI checkpoint is still unannounced, you will know well in advance if you are approaching the checkpoint, as these are well marked ahead of time. Officers have to keep to a system at this checkpoint, such as stopping only every third driver, or every seventh driver, unless they have strong probable cause to stop someone on suspicion of intoxication. If at any point someone is arrested for a DUI, then even if this is his or her first charge, they could face:

  • Six months in jail
  • 1 year of driver's license suspension
  • A $500 fine
  • DUI school completion

As for compliance checks, police are looking to see if workers or local establishments are giving alcohol to minors under the age of 21, and a failed compliance check could mean 60 days' jail and $500 fines. How does one fail a compliance check? In this test, an officer asks a teen to go into a restaurant, for example, and to ask for alcohol. A failed test would be if the waiter doesn't ask for identification, or gives into a bribe and sells to the teen anyway.

Here are the DUI enforcement events over the next few days:

  • Friday, June 20, a DUI checkpoint is going to take place in both District I (Northern Hillsborough County) and District II (Eastern Hillsborough County). These will go on from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. The locations have yet to be announced, but B.A.T. and transportation will be provided.
  • Sunday, June 22, compliance checks are scheduled for District III (Western Hillsborough County) from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
  • Monday, June 23, another round of compliance checks is scheduled, again for District III (Western Hillsborough County), set for 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
