Holiday DUI and Operation 3D

With Christmas and New Year’s Eve just around the corner, we have officially entered one of the busiest DUI seasons of the year. Whether you live in Tampa, New York City, Chicago, or Los Angeles, you can count on the fact that law enforcement nationwide will be cracking down on drunk drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, drunk driving is a deadly epidemic that claims more than 10,000 lives each year.

With that in mind, law enforcement in each state across the U.S. and in most cities are cracking down on DUI between December 18 and December 31, however, some jurisdictions are extending their efforts through Jan. 2.

Hillsborough County’s Operation 3D

Here in Tampa, we have “Operation 3D” brought to you by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office impaired driving enforcement. The Operation 3D – Don’t Drink & Drive program claims to be one of the most successful programs of its kind in the state of Florida.

The public awareness plan was designed to enhance Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s ability to combat drunk driving, and it’s proven to pay off in plenty of DUI arrests.

Operation 3D involves a series of activities, including setting up DUI checkpoints in areas with a history of drunk driving arrests, accidents and fatalities. It also involves saturation patrols, the publishing of news releases, awareness materials, and issuing public service announcements.

Holiday DUI Checkpoints Have Begun

According to the HCSO’s website, they have scheduled more than a dozen dates for multi-agency saturation, heightened patrols, compliance checks, and saturation patrols between Nov. 25 and Dec. 31.

These dates include:

  • Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015 – A heightened patrol for District I, Northern Hillsborough County

  • Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015 – Compliance checks for District II, Eastern Hillsborough County

Generally, the above heightened patrols begin around 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and run through the early morning, sometimes as late as 4:00 a.m.
