Tampa to Host Sunset Music Festival This Memorial Day Weekend

This Memorial Day weekend, Tampa is gearing up to host the annual Sunset Music Festival at Raymond James Stadium. This electronic dance music festival spans two days, featuring headliners such as Marshmello and Excision. While there is concern about the upcoming weather forecast—a big low-pressure system is moving into the Gulf and threatening several inches of rain—music lovers are still excited for the huge outdoor concert.

However, much like the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, what starts off as a day of carefree fun can all too often turn into one of your worst nightmares. At Thomas & Paulk, we’ve seen how innocent concert and festival attendees can find themselves in hot water, regardless of whether that means having had one too much to drink, being caught with illegal substances such as MDMA (“Molly”), or being a minor found in possession of alcohol.

If you or someone you love find yourself in a situation like this, it’s important to know where to turn.

Arrest Spike Around 2017

At our firm, we know the likelihood of arrest spikes around events such as this. In fact, last year it was reported there was an increase in arrests. On Saturday and Sunday of the 2017 festival, there were 21 and 25 people arrested respectively. In 2016, only 33 people were arrested total. In addition to these criminal charges, dozens of people were injured at the festival. Last year, 49 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening incidents related to heat, hydration, alcohol, and injury.
