Compliance Checks Tonight Throughout the West Side Positives

This Saturday, from 7:00 pm to 12:00 am, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will be running these checks on local businesses, specifically on vendors of alcohol in the West Side Positives. These checks are to see whether or not vendors are engaging in the sale of alcohol minors younger than 21 years old.

What this check can look like is an officer asking a teen to participate by ordering alcohol at a convenience store, restaurant, etc. For example, a teen can go up to a store clerk and ask for an alcoholic beverage. The officer will take note if the clerk does not ask for the teen's ID. If a clerk initially refuses to sell to a minor, the teen is allowed to give the clerk a bribe. If the clerk gives in, then he or she will be in grave trouble with the law. He or she could be looking at years in jail or prison, steep fines, and a damaged personal record. Companies can be caught violating this law as well. One business was even fined $716 million dollars from a lawsuit; the store's breaking this law had led to a fatal DUI accident.

These tests are conducted through S.U.C.C.E.E.D., Sheriff's Underage Compliance Checks Education & Enforcement. Such compliance checks have been very effective. Since October of last year, 156 inspections of this kind have led to arrests of individuals who were caught selling alcohol to someone who is underage.
