Bicycle Registration Program May Minimize Theft in the Area

When a bicycle is stolen, it is often hard to find again. A person who leaves their bike outside of a store unchained or even chains their bike but in such a way that it is easy to unlatch is at risk to losing that bicycle to a thief. According to the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office, bicycle theft is growing problem in the Tampa area. Because of the pleasant weather in Florida, many people enjoy riding their bicycles to commute around town, rather than taking cars. Also, promotions on personal fitness have inspired hundreds of Tampa residents to take up their bikes and go for a ride in order to enhance their own health.

Because of the growing issue of theft, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has started a new Bicycle Registration Program which will help them to keep track of the bilks in the area and will make it easier for them to find these bikes should they be stolen somewhere within the city. If you want to register your bike you can complete the registration form and submit it to the Sheriff’s office. You will then receive a registration number assigned to your bicycle. Information will be entered into the office management records system, and will make it easier for sheriff’s to find a bike that has been taken.

In the past, bicycle theft was a somewhat low priority on the scale of importance. Yet statistics show that the increase in bicycle use has led to an increase in theft. This has become a national problem and many county sheriffs’ offices are trying to address the issue on a local level as soon as possible. Research shows that there has been a 67% increase in bicycle commuting in Tampa, and Tampa was ranked the #15 most bicycle-friendly city in the United States. There were 722 bicycle thefts reported in Hillsborough County in 2011 and statistics show that when data comes in the amount of thefts will have most likely increased by 13.6% in 2011.
