Craigslist Roommate Charged With Attempted Murder

A young Florida woman was allegedly attacked by a roommate she found on Craigslist. Her relatives are now saying that if she wakes up from her coma, she may never be able to see again.

D. Jones, 23, was earning money as a bartender for a catering company before she was badly beaten by B. Mitchell, 35, who according to her relatives, had been staying at Jones’ apartment for under a week before the Feb. 14 attack, which happened to be the victim’s birthday.

Jones’ cousin, K. Cabot told Inside Edition that her eyes hemorrhaged because of the severe strangulation. Cabot said that Jones may not be able to see again if she wakes from her coma.

According to Cabot, Jones will have to have a tracheotomy because her airway is deteriorating due to the tubes that were inserted in her throat.

“Her life is ruined. We don’t know if she’s going to wake up and even if she does, her life has been changed forever,” said Cabot.

According to CBS 10, Jones arranged for Mitchell to live in her one-bedroom Miami apartment for two weeks for $800.00. During this two-week period, Jones was staying at her aunt and uncle’s home, but on the eve of her birthday, decided to head over to her apartment to get ready for a night out.

That evening, Jones returned to apartment so she could get dressed up so she could celebrate with her friends. However, Jones’ friends ended up cancelling on her last minute. She only went to her apartment that evening to get dressed for an evening out, otherwise she would have stayed at her aunt and uncle’s.

When her friends canceled on her, she didn’t want to call her aunt and uncle late at night because they had a little girl, said Cabot. Rather than returning to her aunt and uncle’s home, a friend of hers came to the apartment and the two of them talked with Mitchell until he went to bed around 5 a.m.

Jones invited another friend over, who thought Mitchell was behaving like a gentleman. Cabot said that they discussed politics and nobody was drunk or upset. However, other people who knew Mitchell better painted him out differently.

Cabot told IE that he was described as a creep and she heard several accounts of how he was inappropriate towards women. Cabot thinks that at some point Jones rejected Mitchell, and it enraged him.

Mitchell Calls 911 After Attack

Jones’ friends left the apartment around 8 a.m., but by 11 a.m., the 6’2” Mitchell put in a call to 911, claiming that he was attacked by Jones, just 5’3,” and that he defended himself.

The following day, Mitchell was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Currently, Mitchell is in custody being held without bond. His arraignment is scheduled for March 7, court records indicate.

Under Sec. 782.051 of the Florida Statutes, attempted murder is a felony of the first degree, punishable by a prison term not to exceed life and a $10,000 fine.
